I’m still swooning over this family’s session here in Fredericksburg at Old Mill Park! What’s so fun about taking candid photos of a family together is not only is it less pressure for you and your kids to stay still for an hour while saying “Cheese” every .02 seconds and begging the littles to cooperate (although I must say, these were honestly two of the most well-behaved children I’ve ever met!), but you get to release yourself from overly stiff, staged, controlled photos, and instead get to have authentic, silly, and sweet love-soaked moments between all of you. I pride myself on capturing these types of images for my clients, and my hope is that I can draw clients in who seek that type of imagery.
I can confidently say that these types of sessions aren’t a fit for you if:
– You want traditional, posed, everyone-smiling-and-looking-at-the-camera photos. We’ll of course always get a few of those, but they are really not the focus of our time together. (I strive for candids more than anything, and at times, prompting along the way with little games or ideas as we move through your session.)
– Those who are worried about what others think of them and are seeking an exact photo replica from a Pinterest board you saw floating around somewhere. These sessions are up close and personal, they can even feel a little out of control with the kiddos at times, but we get the best outcome when this is the expectation. This isn’t the type of session where everyone is dressed in matching outfits sitting by the fireplace.
This family did exactly that, and I am in love with what we created. A ballet demonstration between dad and daughter, their boy swinging from a tree limb pretending to be a monkey and showing me his karate moves, dad flirting with mom while the kids are climbing in between their legs. And while it is certainly not the most controlled, directed family session you could ever have, you can’t deny that it is a reflection of their more natural selves. Just show up ready to love each other and embrace what unfolds, and we can create something authentic to you.
